5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, John McCaa, a WFAA news anchor and icon of North |

6 | 7 | | Texas media, retired on March 1, 2019, concluding a remarkable |

7 | 8 | | broadcasting career that spanned more than 42 years; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Hired by WFAA as a reporter in the Fort Worth bureau |
---|
9 | 10 | | in 1984, Mr. McCaa transferred to the Dallas newsroom four years |
---|
10 | 11 | | later and began anchoring various broadcasts while also working as |
---|
11 | 12 | | a manager; his rigorous professionalism and calm, reassuring voice |
---|
12 | 13 | | earned him the admiration of colleagues and viewers alike, and in |
---|
13 | 14 | | 1992, he was promoted to full-time anchor of the nightly news, |
---|
14 | 15 | | becoming the first man of color to serve in that role in the |
---|
15 | 16 | | Dallas/Fort Worth market; in recent years, he appeared on three |
---|
16 | 17 | | evening newscasts while also presenting a popular weekly |
---|
17 | 18 | | commentary, "Uncut"; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. McCaa was a kind mentor to other journalists, |

19 | 20 | | from new staff to the more experienced, and he served as president |

20 | 21 | | of both the Press Club of Dallas and the DFW Association of Black |

21 | 22 | | Communicators; in 2012, he was inducted into the C. E. Shuford Hall |

22 | 23 | | of Honor of the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at the |

23 | 24 | | University of North Texas; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Before joining WFAA, Mr. McCaa was a reporter and |

25 | 26 | | anchor at WOWT in Omaha, Nebraska, for seven years; after |
---|
26 | 27 | | completing his bachelor's degree in journalism and mass |
---|
27 | 28 | | communications at Creighton University in Nebraska, he went on to |
---|
28 | 29 | | earn a master's degree in politics from the University of Dallas and |
---|
29 | 30 | | a doctoral degree in humanities-history of ideas at The University |
---|
30 | 31 | | of Texas at Dallas; he is a member of the Golden Key, Delta Epsilon |

31 | 32 | | Iota, and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies; and |

32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, For 35 years, John McCaa served North Texas |

33 | 34 | | residents as a trusted source of information, setting a standard of |

34 | 35 | | excellence to which others may aspire, and his presence will be |

35 | 36 | | missed by his many loyal viewers; now, therefore, be it |
