45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Bee County are gathering at the
67 State Capitol to celebrate Bee County Day on March 13, 2019; and
78 WHEREAS, While artifacts indicate that the region was
89 originally inhabited 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, the first permanent
910 European settlers arrived in the early 19th century, and 11 area
1011 landowners were among the signers of the Texas Declaration of
1112 Independence; and
1213 WHEREAS, Bee County was officially organized on January 25,
1314 1858, and named for Barnard E. Bee Sr., a South Carolina attorney,
1415 soldier, and statesman who joined the Army of the Republic of Texas
1516 and later served as secretary of war under Sam Houston; and
1617 WHEREAS, Located in the South Texas Plains vegetation region,
1718 the county covers 866 square miles that slope gently toward the Gulf
1819 Coast, and with open expanses of grasslands, its economy is
1920 dominated by farming, ranching, and agribusiness, along with oil
2021 and gas operations; Beeville is the county seat, and other towns in
2122 the county include Skidmore, Blue Berry Hill, Pettus, Tuleta,
2223 Tynan, Pawnee, Normanna, and Mineral; and
2324 WHEREAS, Bee County citizens can take pride in an array of
2425 attractions for residents and visitors to explore; Beeville has
2526 successfully revitalized its downtown district and has been named a
2627 Texas Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission; Coastal
2728 Bend College-Beeville offers occupational as well as academic
2829 classes for its students, and it has the oldest academic
2930 educational glassblowing facility in the state; the Beeville Art
3031 Museum, which is funded by the Joe Barnhart Foundation, is housed in
3132 the beautiful and historic Esther Barnhart House; in addition,
3233 visitors come from all across Texas to celebrate the state's rich
3334 traditions at Western Week; and
3435 WHEREAS, Residents of Bee County are working together to
3536 build a brighter future, and this special day provides a fitting
3637 opportunity to pay tribute to the county and its people; now,
3738 therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby recognize March 13, 2019, as Bee County Day at
4041 the State Capitol and extend to those visiting today sincere best
4142 wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
