45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The 102nd birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
67 cause for celebration, and Ira B. Scott Sr. of Houston is marking
78 this significant occasion in his life on March 25, 2019; and
89 WHEREAS, A native of Willis, Ira Scott was born in 1917; he
910 attended public schools in his hometown before transferring to Port
1011 Arthur Lincoln High School because it offered a full 12 grades of
1112 instruction; he completed his bachelor's degree in education at
1213 Huston-Tillotson University and taught in a small community near
1314 Shreveport, Louisiana; subsequently, he worked for the YMCA in New
1415 Orleans; and
1516 WHEREAS, Mr. Scott married the former Evelyn Rhoda Landix,
1617 and the couple became the proud parents of three sons, Ira, Carl,
1718 and Vernon; they lived in Conroe while Mr. Scott taught at Booker
1819 T. Washington School, and he founded the community's first Boy
1920 Scout troop for African Americans; after he joined the faculty of
2021 Phillis Wheatley High, the family relocated to Houston; Wheatley
2122 moved to a new facility the following year, but Mr. Scott remained
2223 at the location as it became E. O. Smith Junior High; he rose to
2324 become principal of the campus and served there for 35 years until
2425 his retirement; for more than a quarter-century, he was a board
2526 member of the credit union for Houston teachers; he also served as
2627 president of the Houston Retired Teachers Association; and
2728 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to his community, Mr. Scott
2829 established the first Boy Scout troop in the Fifth Ward with the
2930 help of fellow educators and parents; he was a trustee of
3031 Huston-Tillotson University and served as president of the alumni
3132 organization, and he has given generously of his time and talents to
3233 the Prince Hall Masons; one of the longest-tenured members of Omega
3334 Psi Phi Fraternity, he has been active in the Nu Phi Chapter for
3435 over seven decades, and he was chapter basileus and a chaplain of
3536 the Ninth District; moreover, he has been a valued member of Trinity
3637 United Methodist Church for more than 65 years, and he has served in
3738 the choir and men's ministry; and
3839 WHEREAS, A distinguished educator and engaged citizen, Ira
3940 Scott has earned the deep admiration of innumerable people, and he
4041 may reflect with great satisfaction on a long lifetime of
4142 achievement; now, therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4344 Legislature hereby congratulate Ira B. Scott Sr. on the joyous
4445 occasion of his 102nd birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes
4546 for continued happiness; and, be it further
4647 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4748 prepared for Mr. Scott as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4849 House of Representatives.
