5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 102nd birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed |

6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Ira B. Scott Sr. of Houston is marking |

7 | 8 | | this significant occasion in his life on March 25, 2019; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Willis, Ira Scott was born in 1917; he |
---|
9 | 10 | | attended public schools in his hometown before transferring to Port |
---|
10 | 11 | | Arthur Lincoln High School because it offered a full 12 grades of |
---|
11 | 12 | | instruction; he completed his bachelor's degree in education at |
---|
12 | 13 | | Huston-Tillotson University and taught in a small community near |
---|
13 | 14 | | Shreveport, Louisiana; subsequently, he worked for the YMCA in New |
---|
14 | 15 | | Orleans; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Scott married the former Evelyn Rhoda Landix, |
---|
16 | 17 | | and the couple became the proud parents of three sons, Ira, Carl, |
---|
17 | 18 | | and Vernon; they lived in Conroe while Mr. Scott taught at Booker |
---|
18 | 19 | | T. Washington School, and he founded the community's first Boy |
---|
19 | 20 | | Scout troop for African Americans; after he joined the faculty of |
---|
20 | 21 | | Phillis Wheatley High, the family relocated to Houston; Wheatley |
---|
21 | 22 | | moved to a new facility the following year, but Mr. Scott remained |
---|
22 | 23 | | at the location as it became E. O. Smith Junior High; he rose to |
---|
23 | 24 | | become principal of the campus and served there for 35 years until |
---|
24 | 25 | | his retirement; for more than a quarter-century, he was a board |
---|
25 | 26 | | member of the credit union for Houston teachers; he also served as |
---|
26 | 27 | | president of the Houston Retired Teachers Association; and |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to his community, Mr. Scott |

28 | 29 | | established the first Boy Scout troop in the Fifth Ward with the |
---|
29 | 30 | | help of fellow educators and parents; he was a trustee of |

30 | 31 | | Huston-Tillotson University and served as president of the alumni |
---|
31 | 32 | | organization, and he has given generously of his time and talents to |
---|
32 | 33 | | the Prince Hall Masons; one of the longest-tenured members of Omega |
---|
33 | 34 | | Psi Phi Fraternity, he has been active in the Nu Phi Chapter for |
---|
34 | 35 | | over seven decades, and he was chapter basileus and a chaplain of |
---|
35 | 36 | | the Ninth District; moreover, he has been a valued member of Trinity |
---|
36 | 37 | | United Methodist Church for more than 65 years, and he has served in |
---|
37 | 38 | | the choir and men's ministry; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, A distinguished educator and engaged citizen, Ira |
---|
39 | 40 | | Scott has earned the deep admiration of innumerable people, and he |

40 | 41 | | may reflect with great satisfaction on a long lifetime of |

41 | 42 | | achievement; now, therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Ira B. Scott Sr. on the joyous |

44 | 45 | | occasion of his 102nd birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes |
