45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Navarro County are gathering in
67 Austin on March 6, 2019, to celebrate Navarro County Day at the
78 State Capitol; and
89 WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state
910 legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José
1011 Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence;
1112 two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the
1213 creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by
1314 Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and
1415 WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping
1516 center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central
1617 Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an
1718 effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the
1819 discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state
1920 of Texas, and it forever changed the economy and destiny of Navarro
2021 County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped
2122 from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in
2223 Texas history; and
2324 WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and
2425 agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops
2526 grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat,
2627 sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy
2728 cows, and horses; and
2829 WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational
2930 opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational
3031 activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and
3132 Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating
3233 history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum, the
3334 Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military History, and Pioneer
3435 Village; moreover, every spring the Corsicana Derrick Days festival
3536 celebrates the area oil and gas industry and its economic benefits;
3637 and
3738 WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich heritage, the
3839 hardworking citizens of Navarro County are looking ahead to the
3940 opportunities of the future, and they may reflect with pride on
4041 their contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Lone Star
4142 State; now, therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4344 Legislature hereby recognize March 6, 2019, as Navarro County Day
4445 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
4546 best wishes for an enjoyable and informative stay in Austin.
