45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A banner year for Mission Veterans Memorial High
67 School quarterback Landry Gilpin culminated in his receipt of the
78 2018 Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year Award, which was
89 presented by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine and Wells
910 Fargo at the Texas Bowl on December 27 in Houston; and
1011 WHEREAS, Mr. Gilpin is the first player from the Rio Grande
1112 Valley to ever receive this highly prestigious title, which in
1213 previous years has been presented to a number of renowned players
1314 who have gone on to further glory in the collegiate and professional
1415 ranks; and
1516 WHEREAS, During the 2018 season, Mr. Gilpin threw for a
1617 record-breaking 4,545 yards and 50 touchdowns, and he also rushed
1718 for 2,115 yards and 32 TDs; he piloted the Patriots through a
1819 successful regular season, and his exceptional play helped the team
1920 reach the quarterfinals of the University Interscholastic League
2021 Class 5A Division 1 playoffs, becoming just the third Rio Grande
2122 Valley squad since 1990 to advance that far into the postseason; and
2223 WHEREAS, Mr. Gilpin also garnered other accolades for his
2324 superlative performance in 2018, including the 5A Offensive Player
2425 of the Year award from the Associated Press Sports Editors and
2526 recognition as the First Team quarterback in the APSE All-State
2627 selections; and
2728 WHEREAS, Over the course of his high school career, Landry
2829 Gilpin has distinguished himself as one of the finest football
2930 players in the Lone Star State, and he is indeed deserving of this
3031 coveted honor; now, therefore, be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3233 Legislature hereby congratulate Landry Gilpin on earning the 2018
3334 Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year Award from Dave Campbell's
3435 Texas Football and Wells Fargo and extend to him sincere best wishes
3536 for continued success; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for Mr. Gilpin as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3839 House of Representatives.
