5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Margaret Rice has made invaluable contributions to |

6 | 7 | | the University of Houston-Victoria as an administrator, professor, |

7 | 8 | | and community member; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Rice began her career with UHV in 1999, when she |
---|
9 | 10 | | accepted a position as director of the university's Letting |
---|
10 | 11 | | Education Achieve Dreams program; in that role, she worked |
---|
11 | 12 | | tirelessly to increase college enrollment from historically |
---|
12 | 13 | | underrepresented groups in the UHV service area; she went on to |
---|
13 | 14 | | become executive director of student services and regional outreach |
---|
14 | 15 | | and then chief of staff, and in 2011 she was named interim associate |
---|
15 | 16 | | vice president for community relations; she retired in 2016 as the |
---|
16 | 17 | | special assistant to the provost and as a professor in the School of |
---|
17 | 18 | | Education, Health Professions, and Human Development; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, During her tenure, Dr. Rice played a key role in a |
---|
19 | 20 | | number of major developments at the university, including the |
---|
20 | 21 | | addition of freshmen and sophomores to the campus and the creation |
---|
21 | 22 | | of an online master's degree in adult and higher education; she also |
---|
22 | 23 | | wrote the school's Recruitment and Retention Plan and consulted |
---|
23 | 24 | | with community organizations to facilitate strategic planning |
---|
24 | 25 | | sessions; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Since her retirement, Dr. Rice has remained |
---|
26 | 27 | | involved in the UHV community, and she and her family endowed the |
---|
27 | 28 | | Justin Truett Hunt Memorial Scholarship in 2016; moreover, she |
---|
28 | 29 | | serves on the board of the Kenedy Independent School District |
---|
29 | 30 | | Education Foundation and the Victoria Bach Festival; Dr. Rice holds |
---|
30 | 31 | | a master's degree in religious education from Southwestern Baptist |
---|
31 | 32 | | Theological Seminary and a doctorate in educational human resource |
---|
32 | 33 | | development from Texas A&M University; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For the past two decades, Margaret Rice has helped |
---|
34 | 35 | | to advance the mission of the University of Houston-Victoria, and |
---|
35 | 36 | | she may take well-deserved pride in all she has accomplished in |
---|
36 | 37 | | behalf of UHV students, faculty, and staff; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby commend Dr. Margaret Rice for her contributions |

39 | 40 | | to the University of Houston-Victoria and extend to her sincere |

40 | 41 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
