56 WHEREAS, Bags of Love, a nonprofit organization based in
67 Lufkin, is performing a valuable service to children who are facing
78 the often traumatic experience of entering foster care; and
89 WHEREAS, The organization was founded by Hallie Hatthorn, a
910 former foster child, to provide a replacement for the trash bags
1011 that children are typically given to gather their belongings when
1112 being relocated to a foster home; through the help of donations and
1213 volunteers, Bags of Love works to supply duffel bags filled with
1314 toiletries, toys, blankets, and other items to foster children who
1415 may otherwise have very little to call their own; and
1516 WHEREAS, Bags of Love is a community partner of the Texas
1617 Department of Family and Protective Services, which often relies on
1718 donations from various charitable groups and initiatives to ensure
1819 the well-being of young victims of abuse and neglect to the fullest
1920 extent possible; since 2016, Bags of Love has delivered more than
2021 3,000 of its bags to child protective agencies across Texas and
2122 other states; and
2223 WHEREAS, A simple duffel bag containing care items can be a
2324 bright spot for children coping with feelings of loss, insecurity,
2425 and uncertainty, and Bags of Love is to be commended for its efforts
2526 to provide a measure of comfort to young people who are in great
2627 need of our advocacy; now, therefore, be it
2728 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
2829 Legislature hereby express support for Bags of Love and its mission
2930 to make transitions easier for children in the care of the Texas
3031 Department of Family and Protective Services.
