45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, David Gilpin, athletic coordinator and head
67 football coach for Veterans Memorial High School in Mission, has
78 devoted nearly 30 years to enriching the lives of student-athletes;

910 WHEREAS, A native of Mission, Coach Gilpin graduated from
1011 Mission High School in 1984 and earned a degree from the University
1112 of North Texas; he began his coaching career in 1990 with Mission
1213 Junior High School, guiding the seventh grade B football team for
1314 two years before his promotion to Mission High School; there, he
1415 initially coached the sophomore team and then became a varsity
1516 assistant coach; he transferred to the newly opened Veterans
1617 Memorial High School in 2002 and was an assistant until 2009, when
1718 he was hired as head coach and athletic coordinator; and
1819 WHEREAS, During the past five years, Coach Gilpin has helped
1920 his players achieve historic success; the Patriots advanced to the
2021 second round of the UIL state playoffs in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and
2122 to the third round in 2016; that set the stage for 2018, when the
2223 team reached the fourth round for the first time in school history,
2324 finishing with an outstanding overall record of 12 wins and 2
2425 losses; moreover, the season became even more special when his son,
2526 Veterans Memorial quarterback Landry Gilpin, became the first Rio
2627 Grande Valley athlete to be named the Mr. Texas Football Player of
2728 the Year by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine; and
2829 WHEREAS, David Gilpin's dedication, leadership, and
2930 commitment to excellence have helped hundreds of students to excel
3031 both on and off the field, and he is indeed worthy of recognition
3132 for his inspiring record of service; now, therefore, be it
3233 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3334 Legislature hereby honor David Gilpin for his accomplishments as a
3435 coach and educator and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
3536 future; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for Coach Gilpin as an expression of high regard by the
3839 Texas House of Representatives.
