5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Bishop John E. McCarthy of Austin passed away on |

6 | 7 | | August 18, 2018, at the age of 88, leaving behind an exceptional |

7 | 8 | | record of social advocacy and charity work; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, John McCarthy was born in Houston on June 21, 1930, |
---|
9 | 10 | | to George and Grace McCarthy; a graduate of St. Thomas High School, |
---|
10 | 11 | | he received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in theology |
---|
11 | 12 | | from the University of St. Thomas; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956, Bishop |
---|
13 | 14 | | McCarthy spent the early years of his career in Pasadena, where he |
---|
14 | 15 | | served as assistant pastor at St. Pius Parish; following his tenure |
---|
15 | 16 | | as assistant pastor at St. Cecilia's Parish and administrator of |
---|
16 | 17 | | All Saints' Parish, both in Houston, he was appointed executive |
---|
17 | 18 | | director of the Bishops' Committee for the Spanish Speaking in San |
---|
18 | 19 | | Antonio; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, From 1967 through 1969, Bishop McCarthy was involved |
---|
20 | 21 | | with the U.S. Catholic Conference in Washington, D.C., and served |
---|
21 | 22 | | as director of the Division for Poverty Programs; embracing the |
---|
22 | 23 | | civil rights movement, he became a founding member of the Catholic |
---|
23 | 24 | | Campaign for Human Development, which addresses poverty nationwide |
---|
24 | 25 | | and holds civic leaders accountable for their communities; he |
---|
25 | 26 | | returned to Houston in 1969 as pastor of St. Theresa's Parish and |
---|
26 | 27 | | went on to serve as executive director of the Texas Catholic |
---|
27 | 28 | | Conference and auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of |
---|
28 | 29 | | Galveston-Houston; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Appointed bishop of the Austin Diocese in 1986, |

30 | 31 | | Bishop McCarthy dedicated himself to meeting the needs of his |
---|
31 | 32 | | fast-growing district throughout his 15-year tenure; known for his |
---|
32 | 33 | | signature mantra of "Let us go forth, and let us go forth together," |
---|
33 | 34 | | he established missionary programs, encouraged social advocacy and |
---|
34 | 35 | | charity work, and opened Catholic schools and parishes, never |
---|
35 | 36 | | seeking recognition for his achievements; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Profoundly devoted to his faith, to serving the |
---|
37 | 38 | | poor, and to reaching out to people of all backgrounds, Bishop John |
---|
38 | 39 | | McCarthy touched the lives of countless individuals in ways beyond |
---|
39 | 40 | | measure, and his compassionate, selfless works will be remembered |
---|
40 | 41 | | with deepest appreciation; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
---|
42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Bishop John E. |
---|
43 | 44 | | McCarthy and extend deepest sympathy to all those who mourn his |
---|
44 | 45 | | passing; and, be it further |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 47 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

47 | 48 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bishop John |
