45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Bishop John E. McCarthy of Austin passed away on
67 August 18, 2018, at the age of 88, leaving behind an exceptional
78 record of social advocacy and charity work; and
89 WHEREAS, John McCarthy was born in Houston on June 21, 1930,
910 to George and Grace McCarthy; a graduate of St. Thomas High School,
1011 he received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in theology
1112 from the University of St. Thomas; and
1213 WHEREAS, Ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956, Bishop
1314 McCarthy spent the early years of his career in Pasadena, where he
1415 served as assistant pastor at St. Pius Parish; following his tenure
1516 as assistant pastor at St. Cecilia's Parish and administrator of
1617 All Saints' Parish, both in Houston, he was appointed executive
1718 director of the Bishops' Committee for the Spanish Speaking in San
1819 Antonio; and
1920 WHEREAS, From 1967 through 1969, Bishop McCarthy was involved
2021 with the U.S. Catholic Conference in Washington, D.C., and served
2122 as director of the Division for Poverty Programs; embracing the
2223 civil rights movement, he became a founding member of the Catholic
2324 Campaign for Human Development, which addresses poverty nationwide
2425 and holds civic leaders accountable for their communities; he
2526 returned to Houston in 1969 as pastor of St. Theresa's Parish and
2627 went on to serve as executive director of the Texas Catholic
2728 Conference and auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of
2829 Galveston-Houston; and
2930 WHEREAS, Appointed bishop of the Austin Diocese in 1986,
3031 Bishop McCarthy dedicated himself to meeting the needs of his
3132 fast-growing district throughout his 15-year tenure; known for his
3233 signature mantra of "Let us go forth, and let us go forth together,"
3334 he established missionary programs, encouraged social advocacy and
3435 charity work, and opened Catholic schools and parishes, never
3536 seeking recognition for his achievements; and
3637 WHEREAS, Profoundly devoted to his faith, to serving the
3738 poor, and to reaching out to people of all backgrounds, Bishop John
3839 McCarthy touched the lives of countless individuals in ways beyond
3940 measure, and his compassionate, selfless works will be remembered
4041 with deepest appreciation; now, therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Bishop John E.
4344 McCarthy and extend deepest sympathy to all those who mourn his
4445 passing; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4748 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bishop John
4849 McCarthy.
