77 relating to voting while confined in jail.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter E, Chapter 31, Election Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 31.125 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 31.125. VOTER EDUCATION FOR PERSONS CONFINED IN JAIL.
1212 (a) The secretary of state, the authority in charge of the jail in
1313 each county, and the early voting clerk of each county shall take
1414 appropriate action to:
1515 (1) inform each qualified voter confined in jail of
1616 the voter's right to vote; and
1717 (2) provide the qualified voter an opportunity to
1818 vote.
1919 (b) The authority in charge of the jail shall allow a person
2020 who is qualified to vote and confined in jail access to a voter
2121 registrar or deputy voter registrar for the purpose of submitting
2222 an application to register to vote.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
