9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 231.009, Election Code, is amended to | |
11 | 11 | read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | Sec. 231.009. PRECEDENCE OF ELECTION CONTEST [ON APPEAL]. | |
13 | 13 | An election contest has precedence in the district and appellate | |
14 | 14 | courts and shall be disposed of as expeditiously as practicable. A | |
15 | 15 | court must to the extent reasonably possible ensure that the action | |
16 | 16 | is brought to final disposition before the expiration of the term of | |
17 | 17 | the contested office. | |
18 | 18 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | |
19 | 19 | to an election contest filed on or after the effective date of this | |
20 | 20 | Act. An election contest filed before the effective date of this Act | |
21 | 21 | is governed by the law as it existed immediately before the | |
22 | 22 | effective date of this Act, and that law is continued in effect for | |
23 | 23 | that purpose. | |
24 | 24 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
