46 AN ACT
57 relating to the approval of certain private or independent
68 institutions of higher education to participate in the tuition
79 equalization grant program.
810 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
911 SECTION 1. Section 61.222, Education Code, is amended by
1012 adding Subsection (d) to read as follows:
1113 (d) The coordinating board shall approve a private or
1214 independent institution of higher education as defined by Section
1315 61.003 that previously qualified under Subsection (a) but no longer
1416 holds the same accreditation as public institutions of higher
1517 education. To qualify under this subsection, an institution must
1618 be:
1719 (1) accredited by an accreditor recognized by the
1820 board;
1921 (2) a work college, as that term is defined by 20
2022 U.S.C. Section 1087-58; and
2123 (3) participating in the federal financial aid program
2224 under 20 U.S.C. Section 1070a.
2325 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2426 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2527 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2628 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2729 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
