55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the United States history end-of-course assessment
88 instrument for public high school students.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 39.023, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (c-7) to read as follows:
1212 (c-7) The United States history end-of-course assessment
1313 instrument adopted under Subsection (c) must include 10 questions
1414 randomly selected by the agency from the civics test administered
1515 by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services as part
1616 of the naturalization process under the federal Immigration and
1717 Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. Section 1101 et seq.). The agency shall:
1818 (1) ensure that only questions aligning with the
1919 United States history curriculum adopted under Subchapter A,
2020 Chapter 28, are included in the end-of-course assessment
2121 instrument; and
2222 (2) annually report which questions were included in
2323 the end-of-course assessment instrument under this subsection,
2424 their answers, and the campus, district, and statewide data
2525 associated with students' performance under this subsection.
2626 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with students who
2727 enter the ninth grade during the 2019-2020 school year.
2828 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2929 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3030 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3131 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3232 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
