57 relating to Holocaust Remembrance Week in public schools.
68 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
79 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
810 amended by adding Section 29.9072 to read as follows:
911 Sec. 29.9072. HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE WEEK. (a) In this
1012 section, "Holocaust" has the meaning assigned by Section 449.001,
1113 Government Code.
1214 (b) To educate students about the Holocaust and inspire in
1315 students a sense of responsibility to recognize and uphold human
1416 value and to prevent future atrocities, the governor shall
1517 designate a week to be known as Holocaust Remembrance Week in public
1618 schools.
1719 (c) Holocaust Remembrance Week shall include
1820 age-appropriate instruction, as determined by each school
1921 district. Instruction shall include:
2022 (1) information about the history of and lessons
2123 learned from the Holocaust;
2224 (2) participation, in person or using technology, in
2325 learning projects about the Holocaust; and
2426 (3) the use of materials developed or approved by the
2527 Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission.
2628 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020
2729 school year.
2830 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2931 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3032 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3133 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3234 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
