| 6 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 7 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 8 | 10 | | amended by adding Section 29.9072 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 9 | 11 | | Sec. 29.9072. HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE WEEK. (a) In this |
|---|
| 10 | 12 | | section, "Holocaust" has the meaning assigned by Section 449.001, |
|---|
| 11 | 13 | | Government Code. |
|---|
| 12 | 14 | | (b) To educate students about the Holocaust and inspire in |
|---|
| 13 | 15 | | students a sense of responsibility to recognize and uphold human |
|---|
| 14 | 16 | | value and to prevent future atrocities, the governor shall |
|---|
| 15 | 17 | | designate a week to be known as Holocaust Remembrance Week in public |
|---|
| 16 | 18 | | schools. |
|---|
| 17 | 19 | | (c) Holocaust Remembrance Week shall include |
|---|
| 18 | 20 | | age-appropriate instruction, as determined by each school |
|---|
| 19 | 21 | | district. Instruction shall include: |
|---|
| 20 | 22 | | (1) information about the history of and lessons |
|---|
| 21 | 23 | | learned from the Holocaust; |
|---|
| 22 | 24 | | (2) participation, in person or using technology, in |
|---|
| 23 | 25 | | learning projects about the Holocaust; and |
|---|
| 24 | 26 | | (3) the use of materials developed or approved by the |
|---|
| 25 | 27 | | Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission. |
|---|
| 26 | 28 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020 |
|---|
| 27 | 29 | | school year. |
|---|
| 28 | 30 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 29 | 31 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 30 | 32 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 31 | 33 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 32 | 34 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
