66 AN ACT
77 relating to display of the national motto in government buildings.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subtitle E, Title 10, Government Code, is
1010 amended by adding Chapter 2207 to read as follows:
1111 CHAPTER 2207. DISPLAY OF NATIONAL MOTTO IN GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS
1212 Sec. 2207.001. DEFINITIONS. In this chapter:
1313 (1) "Political subdivision" includes a public school
1414 district.
1515 (2) "State agency" includes an institution of higher
1616 education, as defined by Section 61.003, Education Code.
1717 Sec. 2207.002. DISPLAY OF NATIONAL MOTTO. (a) A building
1818 owned by this state or a political subdivision of this state must
1919 display a durable poster or framed copy of the United States
2020 national motto, "In God We Trust," if the poster or framed copy
2121 meets the requirements of Subsection (b) and is:
2222 (1) donated for display in the building; or
2323 (2) purchased from private donations and made
2424 available for the building.
2525 (b) A poster or framed copy of the national motto described
2626 by Subsection (a) must contain a representation of the United
2727 States flag centered under the national motto and a representation
2828 of the state flag.
2929 (c) A state agency and political subdivision may accept and
3030 use private donations for the purposes of Subsection (a).
3131 SECTION 2. Section 1.004, Education Code, is repealed.
3232 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3333 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3434 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3535 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3636 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
