55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Walter Joseph Marm
77 Jr. is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City
88 Weekend in Gainesville; and
99 WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor
1010 Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of
1111 individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's
1212 highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join
1313 together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal
1414 recipients to the city for a special series of events; and
1515 WHEREAS, U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Walter Marm earned his
1616 Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War, when he was a platoon leader
1717 with the 1st Cavalry Division; during an operation to relieve a
1818 friendly unit that was surrounded by the enemy, his platoon came
1919 under withering fire; after killing four enemy soldiers, he
2020 single-handedly attacked a concealed machine gun, first with an
2121 antitank weapon and then by charging it across 30 meters of open
2222 ground and lobbing hand grenades; finally, despite being wounded,
2323 he continued to use his rifle until he had killed all eight of the
2424 enemy soldiers manning the gun; and
2525 WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of
2626 duty, Walter Marm fulfilled the highest ideals of the United States
2727 armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a grateful
2828 nation; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
3030 hereby pay tribute to Walter Joseph Marm Jr. on the occasion of the
3131 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him
3232 for his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it
3333 further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for Mr. Marm as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3636 House of Representatives and Senate.
