| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Gary B. Beikirch is |

| 7 | 7 | | being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend |

| 8 | 8 | | in Gainesville; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Beikirch, a veteran of the United States |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Army, served as a medical aidman with Company B of the 5th Special |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Forces Group during the Vietnam War; tasked with defending Camp Dak |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Seang from a harrowing assault, he braved a hail of enemy bullets to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | come to the aid of his injured comrades; despite being seriously |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | wounded by fragments from an exploding mortar shell, he was able to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | carry an injured American officer to a medical aid station, before |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | immediately returning to the line of fire to assist others, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | including a Vietnamese soldier who was barely clinging to life; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | duty, Gary B. Beikirch fulfilled the highest ideals of the United |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | hereby pay tribute to Gary B. Beikirch on the occasion of the 2019 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it |
