| 7 | 7 | | Sasser is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City |

| 8 | 8 | | Weekend in Gainesville; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Army Specialist Fifth Class Clarence Sasser |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | while serving as a medical aidman with the Headquarters Company of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division; after his |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | unit suffered more than 30 casualties in the first few minutes of an |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | air assault on a heavily fortified enemy position, Specialist |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Sasser gallantly ran across an open rice paddy amid a hail of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | bullets to tend to the injured; he continued to provide urgently |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | needed treatment under intense fire even after being badly wounded |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | himself in both legs and his left shoulder; he ultimately cared for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | a group of comrades for five hours in desperate circumstances |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | before they were all evacuated; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | duty, Clarence Eugene Sasser fulfilled the highest ideals of the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |

| 32 | 32 | | hereby pay tribute to Clarence Eugene Sasser on the occasion of the |

| 33 | 33 | | 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him |
