| 7 | 7 | | Thornton is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host |

|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Navy Petty Officer Michael Thornton earned his |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War, when he was one of two U.S. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Navy advisors to a three-man Vietnamese Navy SEAL team during a raid |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | on an enemy base along a river; after the senior U.S. Navy advisor |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | was badly wounded, PO Thornton returned to him under heavy fire, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | killed two enemy soldiers, and dragged his comrade to the river, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | where he then inflated the wounded man's life jacket and towed him |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | through the water for two hours until they were rescued; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | duty, Michael Edwin Thornton fulfilled the highest ideals of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |

| 28 | 28 | | hereby pay tribute to Michael Edwin Thornton on the occasion of the |

| 29 | 29 | | 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him |

| 30 | 30 | | for his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it |
