55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Michael Edwin
77 Thornton is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host
88 City Weekend in Gainesville; and
99 WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor
1010 Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of
1111 individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's
1212 highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join
1313 together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal
1414 recipients to the city for a special series of events; and
1515 WHEREAS, U.S. Navy Petty Officer Michael Thornton earned his
1616 Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War, when he was one of two U.S.
1717 Navy advisors to a three-man Vietnamese Navy SEAL team during a raid
1818 on an enemy base along a river; after the senior U.S. Navy advisor
1919 was badly wounded, PO Thornton returned to him under heavy fire,
2020 killed two enemy soldiers, and dragged his comrade to the river,
2121 where he then inflated the wounded man's life jacket and towed him
2222 through the water for two hours until they were rescued; and
2323 WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of
2424 duty, Michael Edwin Thornton fulfilled the highest ideals of the
2525 United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting
2626 admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
2828 hereby pay tribute to Michael Edwin Thornton on the occasion of the
2929 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him
3030 for his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it
3131 further
3232 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3333 prepared for Mr. Thornton as an expression of high regard by the
3434 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
