5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas is the present-day |

6 | 6 | | incarnation of a proud people who have lived in Texas and northern |

7 | 7 | | Mexico for more than 300 years; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Lipan Apaches have entered into treaties, |
---|
9 | 9 | | alliances, and pledges of friendship with the governments of Spain, |
---|
10 | 10 | | Mexico, the German Confederation, and the United States; President |
---|
11 | 11 | | Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas formally acknowledged a |
---|
12 | 12 | | friendship with the Lipan Apaches through the Treaty of Live Oak |
---|
13 | 13 | | Point in 1838; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Lipan Apache Tribe is represented by a |
---|
15 | 15 | | tribal government with a constitution and bylaws, and the tribe is a |
---|
16 | 16 | | voting member of the National Congress of American Indians; the |
---|
17 | 17 | | eagle remains sacred to the tribe, and the United States Department |
---|
18 | 18 | | of the Interior has acknowledged the religious and legal rights of |
---|
19 | 19 | | more than 200 tribal members to use eagle feathers in their |
---|
20 | 20 | | ceremonial practices; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Lipan Apaches have faithfully served in the armed |
---|
22 | 22 | | forces of the United States during World War I, World War II, the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, |
---|
24 | 24 | | as well as in other deployments; moreover, tribe member Frank Leota |
---|
25 | 25 | | of San Antonio has risen to the prestigious post of command sergeant |
---|
26 | 26 | | major for the United States Army Pacific Command; in addition, |
---|
27 | 27 | | members of the Lipan Apache Tribe have served as police officers, |
---|
28 | 28 | | ministers, nurses, and schoolteachers, as well as in many other |
---|
29 | 29 | | important occupations; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with a rich heritage, the Lipan Apaches have |
---|
31 | 31 | | maintained a strong sense of identity and community, and they |
---|
32 | 32 | | continue to make a valuable contribution to the culture of the Lone |
---|
33 | 33 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | hereby recognize the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and commend it on |
---|
36 | 36 | | its many valuable contributions to this state; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
38 | 38 | | prepared for the tribe as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | House of Representatives and Senate. |
