| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Many civic-minded Texans are gathering in Austin |

| 3 | 3 | | on February 5, 2019, in celebration of Urban Leagues of Greater |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Texas Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In the early 20th century, African Americans |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | migrating to northern cities soon discovered that they had not |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | escaped racial discrimination; good jobs were denied them, and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | most were forced to live in substandard housing; the National |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Urban League formed in 1911 to address those issues, and the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | organization trained African American social workers to help |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | migrant families attain educational and employment |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | opportunities; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, By the end of World War I, the league had |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | established operations in 30 cities and had evolved to take on |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | new challenges; in the 1930s, it advocated powerfully for the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | inclusion of African Americans in the New Deal and fought to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | desegregate labor unions; the Urban League later played a major |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | role in the Civil Rights Era, and it hosted Martin Luther King |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Jr., A. Philip Randolph, and other leaders at planning meetings |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | for the March on Washington; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The league continued to expand its mission, and in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the 1970s, it adopted a broader focus on such contemporary |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | problems as environmental protection and energy conservation, as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | well as on the many aspects of poverty; today, members of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | league continue to work tirelessly in behalf of economic |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | empowerment, educational opportunity, and the guarantee of civil |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | rights; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, Urban League members have |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | dedicated themselves to securing social and economic justice for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | all, and the organization continues to play a vital role in |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | communities across our state and nation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 5, 2019, as Urban Leagues |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | of Greater Texas Day at the State Capitol and extend to |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | participants sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable |
