SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 124
WHEREAS, Proud Texans are gathering in the rotunda of the
State Capitol to celebrate the 20th annual State of Texas
Anniversary Remembrance Day, or STAR Day, on February 18, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The last president of the Republic of Texas,
Dr. Anson Jones, lowered the flag of the republic for the final
time in Austin on February 19, 1846, and the Stars and Stripes
were then raised in its place; the assembled crowd also witnessed
the swearing-in of the state's first governor, James Pinckney
Henderson; and
WHEREAS, In 1999, the 76th Texas Legislature recognized
February 19 as STAR Day, to mark the anniversary of the day that
authority was formally transferred from the government of the
Republic of Texas to that of the new State of Texas; the day is
regularly observed with programs in public schools and other
places to commemorate the annexation of the state and to inspire
a greater appreciation of its history; and
WHEREAS, This year's STAR Day ceremony at the State Capitol
will feature a performance by the R. D. McAdams Junior High
School choir of the Dickinson Independent School District; in
addition, the ceremony will also commemorate Iwo Jima Day, the
anniversary of the American invasion of Iwo Jima during World War
II, with a presentation of colors by members of the Round Rock
High School Marine Corps ROTC; and
WHEREAS, In creating STAR Day, Texas lawmakers sought to
foster an appreciation for the rich heritage of the Lone Star
State and to encourage an awareness among young Texans that their
own contributions will be vital to the continuing progress and
prosperity of this great land; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2019, as State of
Texas Anniversary Remembrance Day.
