2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Fannin County are gathering in |

3 | 3 | | Austin on February 12, 2019, to celebrate Fannin County Day at |
---|
4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The first nonnative settlements in the area that |
---|
6 | 6 | | would become Fannin County were established in 1836, the year |
---|
7 | 7 | | Texas won its independence from Mexico; when the county was |
---|
8 | 8 | | formed the following year, it took its name from Colonel James |
---|
9 | 9 | | Walker Fannin Jr., a commander in the Texas revolutionary army, |
---|
10 | 10 | | who had been killed in the Goliad Massacre; Bonham, the county |
---|
11 | 11 | | seat, was named for another hero of the Texas Revolution, James |
---|
12 | 12 | | Bonham, who died at the Alamo and who is now honored with a statue |
---|
13 | 13 | | at the county courthouse; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, With its gently rolling hills bounded by the Red |
---|
15 | 15 | | River to the north, Fannin County provides good land for farming |
---|
16 | 16 | | and ranching; today, cattle, corn, wheat, milo, pecans, and hay |
---|
17 | 17 | | are key products, and the many acres of farmland in the county |
---|
18 | 18 | | create a tranquil, pastoral landscape; other industries, such as |
---|
19 | 19 | | communications and manufacturing, help to strengthen and |
---|
20 | 20 | | diversify the economy; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Bonham is the county's largest city, and it is the |
---|
22 | 22 | | site of the Fannin County Museum of History, the Creative Arts |
---|
23 | 23 | | Center, and Fort Inglish Park; the city was the hometown of Sam |
---|
24 | 24 | | Rayburn, the legendary Texas politician who was a member of |
---|
25 | 25 | | Congress for 48 years and who still ranks as the longest-serving |
---|
26 | 26 | | speaker of the United States House of Representatives; his legacy |
---|
27 | 27 | | is recalled at the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum and at the Sam |
---|
28 | 28 | | Rayburn House Museum; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The county offers a number of attractions for |
---|
30 | 30 | | outdoor enthusiasts, including Lake Bonham, which is bordered by |
---|
31 | 31 | | a golf course and camping facilities; other lakes are found at |
---|
32 | 32 | | Bonham State Park and the Caddo National Grasslands preserve, |
---|
33 | 33 | | which offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and other |
---|
34 | 34 | | activities; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The hardworking residents of Fannin County may |
---|
36 | 36 | | take pride in their area's rich history, productive businesses, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and abundant recreational activities, and it is indeed fitting to |
---|
38 | 38 | | pay tribute to their many contributions to the Lone Star State; |
---|
39 | 39 | | now, therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 12, 2019, as Fannin |
---|
42 | 42 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
43 | 43 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable |
---|
44 | 44 | | stay in Austin. |
