| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Dr. James P. Allison, chair of the department of |

| 3 | 3 | | immunology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center |

| 4 | 4 | | in Houston, was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Medicine; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A world-renowned scientist and pioneer in cancer |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | immunotherapy, Dr. Allison received the award jointly with |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Japanese immunologist Tasuku Honjo for their independent |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | discovery of cancer therapies that stimulate the immune system to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | attack tumor cells; during Dr. Allison's research of T cells, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | white blood cells that regulate a wide range of immune responses, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | he found that deactivating the protein CTLA-4 can unleash the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | body's power to fight back against malignant tumors; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Allison earned his doctoral degree at The |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | University of Texas at Austin; the executive director of the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Immunotherapy Platform at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he is also the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | center's Vivian L. Smith Distinguished Chair in Immunology and the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy; among |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | his myriad honors, he is a member of the National Academies of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Science and Medicine, and he was recognized with the Lasker-Debakey |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Clinical Medical Research Award in 2015; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The groundbreaking contributions of Dr. James |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Allison have placed him at the forefront of a promising new field of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | cancer research, and his efforts are inspiring other scientists in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Lone Star State and beyond; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. James P. Allison on his |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | receipt of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success with his |
