2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators, |

3 | 3 | | and members of the board of regents from the University of Houston |
---|
4 | 4 | | are visiting Austin on February 12, 2019, to participate in |
---|
5 | 5 | | University of Houston Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Tier One campus is located in the nation's |
---|
7 | 7 | | fourth largest city, within a region that is home to a quarter of |
---|
8 | 8 | | the state's population and that generates nearly a third of the |
---|
9 | 9 | | state's gross product; the student body, numbering more than |
---|
10 | 10 | | 46,000, including many first-generation college students, |
---|
11 | 11 | | mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Houston; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the university awards more than 10,000 |
---|
13 | 13 | | degrees in 261 undergraduate and graduate academic programs; it now |
---|
14 | 14 | | counts more than 285,000 alumni, many of whom stay in Texas, where |
---|
15 | 15 | | they contribute to the success of our communities and our state; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of chancellor and |
---|
17 | 17 | | president Renu Khator, the university launched a $1 billion |
---|
18 | 18 | | system-wide fund-raising campaign that is close to reaching its |
---|
19 | 19 | | goal, fueled in part by gifts such as the one that will cover |
---|
20 | 20 | | tuition for the entire inaugural class of the new University of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Houston College of Medicine, whose focus is to prepare doctors to |
---|
22 | 22 | | serve in the state's underserved communities; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The university is home to five nationally funded |
---|
24 | 24 | | research centers and 25 university research centers and |
---|
25 | 25 | | institutes, and had $177.7 million in research expenditures last |
---|
26 | 26 | | year, mainly in the critical areas of cyber and national |
---|
27 | 27 | | security, drug discovery and development, sustainable |
---|
28 | 28 | | communities and infrastructure, and accessible health care; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For more than nine decades, the University of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Houston has contributed significantly to creating generation |
---|
31 | 31 | | after generation of productive and responsible citizens; now, |
---|
32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 12, 2019, as University |
---|
35 | 35 | | of Houston Day at the State Capitol and extend to all |
---|
36 | 36 | | participants sincere best wishes for an informative and |
---|
37 | 37 | | enjoyable visit. |
