SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 166
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Literacy Center of Harlingen on the occasion of its
2019 Celebrity Roast, which is taking place February 7, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The Literacy Center of Harlingen is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to helping adults in Harlingen and the
surrounding areas reach their full potential by enabling them to
acquire the English language skills they need to help themselves
in their daily lives; and
WHEREAS, The center offers a wide range of courses,
including English as a Second Language, Basic Literacy, Basic
Math Instruction, and Citizenship Preparation; its GED Program
and Computer Assisted Instruction have helped countless people
continue their education; and
WHEREAS, This year's celebrity roast will pay tribute to
Lupita Muniz, a Harlingen educator and community leader who has
worked to raise awareness of environmental issues and has been
recognized with Outstanding Environmental Teacher of the Year
awards from three Texas governors; she is the board chair for the
Harlingen Boys and Girls Club, has been an active fund-raiser for
numerous charities, and helped Harlingen become an All-America
City; she is also an avid traveler and has climbed to the top of
the Great Wall of China; and
WHEREAS, With such an eminent honoree, the Literacy Center
of Harlingen is sure to have a successful 2019 Celebrity Roast;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby commend the Literacy Center of Harlingen on
its outstanding work in the community and extend to its
management and staff best wishes for a successful and memorable
2019 Celebrity Roast; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the center as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
