2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Panola County are gathering in |

3 | 3 | | Austin on February 19, 2019, to celebrate Panola County Day at |

4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in northeastern Texas and forming part of |
---|
6 | 6 | | the state's border with Louisiana, Panola County covers more than |
---|
7 | 7 | | 800 square miles of forests and rolling plains and is traversed |
---|
8 | 8 | | by the Sabine River; on March 30, 1846, the Texas Legislature |
---|
9 | 9 | | officially created Panola County, and two years later, voters |
---|
10 | 10 | | chose Carthage as the county seat; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, It is believed that Judge John Allison, a |
---|
12 | 12 | | prominent civic leader, suggested the name Panola, which may be |
---|
13 | 13 | | derived from the Cherokee word for cotton, ponolo; the area's |
---|
14 | 14 | | rich soil was well suited to the crop, and cotton became the |
---|
15 | 15 | | county's main agricultural product; today, Panola County enjoys |
---|
16 | 16 | | a diversified economy, primarily based in oil and gas production, |
---|
17 | 17 | | agriculture, food processing, and timber; the lush forests also |
---|
18 | 18 | | make the county a popular destination for hiking, birding, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | camping enthusiasts, while anglers enjoy the good fishing waters |
---|
20 | 20 | | of Martin Creek Lake and Murvaul Lake; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, With nearly 50 Texas Historical Commission |
---|
22 | 22 | | markers, Panola County has a rich and fascinating history; it was |
---|
23 | 23 | | the birthplace of several notable Texans, including Margie |
---|
24 | 24 | | Elizabeth Neal, the first woman elected to serve in the Texas |
---|
25 | 25 | | Senate, and country music stars Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves; a |
---|
26 | 26 | | museum dedicated to Mr. Ritter and a memorial devoted to |
---|
27 | 27 | | Mr.ReevesarelocatedinCarthage,asistheTexasCountryMusic |
---|
28 | 28 | | Hall of Fame, which honors the legacies of both of these men, |
---|
29 | 29 | | along with other country music legends from the state; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Carthage, which was named a National Main Street |
---|
31 | 31 | | City in Texas in 2011, is also home to Panola College and the |
---|
32 | 32 | | historic Esquire Theater, which hosts the Country Music Hayride |
---|
33 | 33 | | live music show every Saturday night; other popular events taking |
---|
34 | 34 | | place in the county seat include the Piney Woods Quilt Festival |

35 | 35 | | in April and the Potlatch in October, which features a karaoke |
---|
36 | 36 | | contest, a car show, and arts and crafts; in addition, the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Footprints in the Sand monument, a poignant religious sculpture |
---|
38 | 38 | | at Pippen Memorial Park, was completed in 2014; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Panola County take great pride in |
---|
40 | 40 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even |
---|
41 | 41 | | brighter future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them and their |
---|
42 | 42 | | unique contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |
---|

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 19, 2019, as Panola |

46 | 46 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |

47 | 47 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and informative |
