11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 174
22 WHEREAS, A banner year for Mission Veterans Memorial High
33 School quarterback Landry Gilpin culminated in his receipt of the
44 2018 Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year Award, which was
55 presented by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine and Wells
66 Fargo at the Texas Bowl on December 27 in Houston; and
77 WHEREAS, Mr. Gilpin is the first player from the Rio Grande
88 Valley to ever receive this highly prestigious title, which in
99 previous years has been presented to a number of renowned players
1010 who have gone on to further glory in the collegiate and
1111 professional ranks; and
1212 WHEREAS, During the 2018 season, Mr. Gilpin threw for a
1313 record-breaking 4,545 yards and 50 touchdowns, and he also rushed
1414 for 2,115 yards and 32 TDs; he piloted the Patriots through a
1515 successful regular season, and his exceptional play helped the
1616 team reach the quarterfinals of the University Interscholastic
1717 League Class 5A Division 1 playoffs, becoming just the third Rio
1818 Grande Valley squad since 1990 to advance that far into the
1919 postseason; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Gilpin also garnered other accolades for his
2121 superlative performance in 2018, including the 5A Offensive
2222 Player of the Year award from the Associated Press Sports Editors
2323 and recognition as the First Team quarterback in the APSE
2424 All-State selections; and
2525 WHEREAS, Over the course of his high school career, Landry
2626 Gilpin has distinguished himself as one of the finest football
2727 players in the Lone Star State, and he is indeed deserving of this
2828 coveted honor; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3030 Legislature, hereby congratulate Landry Gilpin on earning the
3131 2018 Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year Award from Dave
3232 Campbell's Texas Football and Wells Fargo and extend to him
3333 sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3535 prepared for Mr. Gilpin as an expression of high regard by the
3636 Texas Senate.
