11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 176
22 WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mission are gathering in Austin
33 on February 13, 2019, to celebrate Mission Day at the State
44 Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, The City of Mission was founded in 1908, the year
66 the Missouri Pacific Railroad established a station in the area,
77 and the city was named for La Lomita Mission, which was located
88 nearby; since then, Mission has grown to be a thriving city with a
99 population of more than 84,000 people; and
1010 WHEREAS, The first citrus trees in the Rio Grande Valley
1111 were planted in the Mission area; today, the citrus industry is a
1212 multimillion-dollar business and is celebrated each year at the
1313 Texas Citrus Fiesta; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mission is a center for international trade and
1515 entrepreneurism, and the city is a partner in the Anzalduas
1616 International Bridge, a vital trade and tourism connection to
1717 Mexico; Mission is also home to several international
1818 manufacturers, such as Stanley Black and Decker, Royal
1919 Technologies, and Southwest Steel Coil, and to the Center for
2020 Education and Economic Development, or CEED, a dynamic
2121 entrepreneurship and co-working facility; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mission was immortalized in Larry McMurtry's
2323 novel and television miniseries, Lonesome Dove, and notable
2424 residents have included the United States senator and treasury
2525 secretary Lloyd Bentsen and United States congressman Kika de la
2626 Garza; moreover, Mission was the childhood home of Tom Landry and
2727 a second home to Governor Allan Shivers and to three-time
2828 presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan; and
2929 WHEREAS, Recreational opportunities are abundant in Mission,
3030 with such attractions as the National Butterfly Center, the World
3131 Birding Center headquarters, Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State
3232 Park, and the 10-mile Mission Hike and Bike Trail; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mission Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity
3434 to honor the border city's heritage and its many charms, which are
3535 enjoyed by residents and vacationers alike; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3737 Legislature, hereby recognize February 13, 2019, as Mission Day
3838 at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the members of the
3939 visiting delegation for an enjoyable and memorable stay in Austin.
