55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Wayne H. Holtzman, who died
77 January 23, 2019, at the age of 96; and
88 WHEREAS, Wayne Holtzman was born in Chicago on
99 January 16, 1923; he had an idyllic childhood in spite of the
1010 lean years of the Great Depression; he spent time outdoors with
1111 his father and grandfather, and his adventures as a Sea Scout
1212 in high school inspired him to pursue service as a naval
1313 officer; and
1414 WHEREAS, Wayne earned his bachelor's degree from
1515 Northwestern University, and in 1944, he was commissioned into
1616 the United States Navy from the Reserve Officer's Training Corps;
1717 he served with distinction as a gunnery officer on the USS Iowa in
1818 the Third and Fifth Pacific Fleets, and he witnessed the Japanese
1919 surrender from his station in Tokyo Bay; and
2020 WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned to
2121 Northwestern University to earn his master's degree, and he
2222 later earned a doctoral degree in psychology from Stanford
2323 University; and
2424 WHEREAS, In 1949, Wayne joined the faculty of the Psychology
2525 Department at The University of Texas at Austin; he gained
2626 international recognition in 1961, when he published the Holtzman
2727 Inkblot Technique, an inkblot perception and personality test that
2828 continues to be used today by psychologists and psychiatrists in
2929 the United States, Mexico, and Europe; and
3030 WHEREAS, During his distinguished 54-year career at the
3131 university, Wayne served as a professor of psychology, dean of
3232 the College of Education, and president of the Hogg Foundation
3333 for Mental Health, and he received numerous professional
3434 accolades; he also served as a president of the International
3535 Union of Psychological Science, a position that enabled him to
3636 assist in the development of psychology in China, Mexico, and
3737 other countries; and
3838 WHEREAS, Wayne shared 71 years of marriage with Joan King
3939 Holtzman, and they were blessed with four sons, 10
4040 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren; he cherished his
4141 family, and he enjoyed coordinating vacations with his many
4242 extended family members; he was a highly respected member of
4343 the Austin community and a faithful congregant of University
4444 United Methodist Church; and
4545 WHEREAS, Wayne Holtzman was a man of exceptional wisdom,
4646 kindness, and generosity; he was beloved by many, and he will
4747 long be remembered with affection and admiration by all who were
4848 privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5151 family of Dr. Wayne H. Holtzman; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Wayne Holtzman.
