22 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Renal Coalition and the Kidney
33 Alliance of Texas are visiting Austin on February 12, 2019, to

55 Capitol; and
66 WHEREAS, This biennial event was established in 1997 by
77 Rita Littlefield, a founding member of the Texas Renal Coalition
88 and the Kidney Alliance of Texas, who has worked tirelessly for
99 more than three decades in behalf of kidney patients; in the
1010 drive to raise awareness of a significant medical issue, the
1111 gathering unites patients, health care providers, and
1212 organizations, including the National Kidney Foundation, Texas
1313 Kidney Foundation, South Plains Kidney Foundation, and State
1414 Association of Medical Professionals; and
1515 WHEREAS, Although kidney disease is a serious and rapidly
1616 growing health problem, many Texans remain unaware that they are
1717 at risk; left undetected, chronic kidney disease can lead to
1818 premature death from heart disease or other complications, or to
1919 kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a transplant to sustain
2020 life; early detection and management can prevent or slow the
2121 progression of chronic kidney disease and decrease health care
2222 expenditures associated with the treatment of advanced kidney
2323 disease; and
2424 WHEREAS, Many medical professionals, organizations, and
2525 volunteers in the state are committed to ensuring the highest
2626 quality of care for kidney patients; the Texas Renal Coalition
2727 contributes significantly to this mission as it monitors health
2828 policies for dialysis and transplant patients, offers education
2929 programs to improve public awareness about the disease, and acts
3030 as a clearinghouse for information related to legislative
3131 issues; and
3232 WHEREAS, Benefiting from the dedication and leadership of
3333 Rita Littlefield, the Texas Renal Coalition, the Kidney Alliance
3434 of Texas, and their associates have made a positive difference in
3535 the lives of innumerable Texans, and it is most fitting to
3636 recognize Ms. Littlefield and these organizations for their
3737 achievements; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3939 Legislature, hereby recognize February 12, 2019, as Rita
4040 L. Littlefield Kidney Day at the State Capitol and extend to all
4141 those participating sincere best wishes for a productive and
4242 memorable event.
