| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Waller County are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on January 22, 2019, to celebrate Waller County Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Waller County area was originally settled by |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | members of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred during the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 1820s; shortly thereafter, it became the site of perhaps the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | first cotton plantation in Texas, which was used as an encampment |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | by members of General Sam Houston's army during the Texas |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Revolution; in 1873, the county was carved from sections of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Austin and Grimes Counties and named after Edwin Waller, a signer |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first mayor of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Austin; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Waller County's growth was chiefly driven by |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | agriculture, with cotton, corn, and cattle serving as mainstays, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | until the discovery of petroleum in the 1930s helped to diversify |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | its economy; today, farming, ranching, and mineral resources are |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | important to the area, and its rural character and proximity to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Houston have made it an attractive destination for new residents; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | additionally, opportunities abound for hunting and fishing, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the region's natural beauty and wildlife can be experienced at |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the Katy Prairie, a coastal grassland area that is a haven for |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | bird-watchers; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Hempstead is the county seat and the host of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | annual Waller County Fair and its summertime Watermelon |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Festival, a favorite of residents and visitors alike; Prairie |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | View, recognized as an ideal place to live, learn, and raise a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | family, is home to Prairie View A&M University, the second-oldest |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | public institution of higher learning in the state, and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Brookshire is a quaint rural town that is the location of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Brookwood Community, as well as several international companies |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | that serve as major employers; while only parts of Waller and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Katy are in the county, they are both fast-growing cities that |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | boast excellent schools and contribute greatly to the culture and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | prosperity of the area; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their rich heritage as they work toward |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | building an even brighter future, the citizens of Waller County |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | have many reasons to be proud of the place they call home; now, |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize January 22, 2019, as Waller County |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin. |
