2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol is being |

3 | 3 | | celebrated February 19, 2019, and the Texas Senate takes great |
---|
4 | 4 | | pleasure in recognizing this region and its citizens who have |
---|
5 | 5 | | contributed to the development of the Lone Star State; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The area known today as Jim Wells County was |
---|
7 | 7 | | explored in the early 1500s by Alvar Nuñez de Cabeza de Vaca and |
---|
8 | 8 | | figures prominently in the early days of Texas; the land became a |
---|
9 | 9 | | part of Texas after Texas gained its independence from Mexico in |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1836; there were extensive landholdings in the area by 1850, when |
---|
11 | 11 | | early settlers to the region arrived and began to build towns; |
---|
12 | 12 | | railroads followed soon thereafter, and in 1886, a new town |
---|
13 | 13 | | developed where two rail lines intersected; the town of Alice was |
---|
14 | 14 | | named for Alice King and eventually became the largest |
---|
15 | 15 | | cattle-shipping point in the world; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County was created and organized by the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Texas Legislature on March 11, 1911, and Alice became the county |
---|
18 | 18 | | seat; originally a part of Nueces County, the county was named |
---|
19 | 19 | | for a prominent political figure and land developer, James B. |
---|
20 | 20 | | Wells Jr., who was also the purchasing agent for the King |
---|
21 | 21 | | Ranch; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County is a valuable agricultural area |
---|
23 | 23 | | that has contributed significantly to the development of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | southwestern part of the United States; since the mid-1800s, when |
---|
25 | 25 | | the famous Chisholm Trail passed through the county, the cattle |
---|
26 | 26 | | industry has played a major role in the area's economy; mesquite |
---|
27 | 27 | | brush and grasses in the western part provide ideal grazing |
---|
28 | 28 | | conditions for livestock, and coastal plains to the east produce |
---|
29 | 29 | | Coastal Bermuda grass and vegetables; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The first notable oil activity in the county was |
---|
31 | 31 | | initiated in 1936, and the first major oil producer was |
---|
32 | 32 | | established northeast of Alice; the oil rush brought many new |
---|
33 | 33 | | families to Jim Wells County; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The City of Alice is situated in the geographical |
---|
35 | 35 | | heart of South Texas in an area that has developed into a notable |
---|
36 | 36 | | hub of international trade due to its strategic location at the |
---|
37 | 37 | | intersection of two important highways and its proximity to |
---|
38 | 38 | | primary United States-Mexico trade routes that connect Laredo |
---|
39 | 39 | | and the Rio Grande Valley with the Port of Corpus Christi; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, In addition to the City of Alice, which still |
---|
41 | 41 | | serves as the county seat, Jim Wells County is home to the Cities |
---|
42 | 42 | | of Orange Grove, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Premont, Sandia, and La |
---|
43 | 43 | | Gloria; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The county's economy has benefited not only from |
---|
45 | 45 | | the oil business, ranching, cattle shipping, and cotton and grain |
---|
46 | 46 | | production, but also from a fine public school system, a modern |
---|
47 | 47 | | hospital, and an expanding health-related service industry; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, The history of Jim Wells County has been carefully |
---|
49 | 49 | | preserved at the South Texas Museum, which was established in the |
---|
50 | 50 | | former family ranch headquarters of the McGill family and has |
---|
51 | 51 | | been designated a Texas Historical Landmark; and |
---|
52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Jim Wells County are justifiably |
---|
53 | 53 | | proud of their unique heritage and have retained the social |
---|
54 | 54 | | fabric of their culture through fiestas, county fairs, rodeos, |
---|
55 | 55 | | and outdoor activities such as hunting and water sports; and |
---|
56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, Jim Wells County Day at the State Capitol is an |
---|
57 | 57 | | appropriate occasion for the Texas Senate to recognize the |
---|
58 | 58 | | residents of Jim Wells County and to commend them for their |
---|
59 | 59 | | excellent accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
---|
60 | 60 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
61 | 61 | | Legislature, hereby declare February 19, 2019, Jim Wells County |
---|
62 | 62 | | Day at the State Capitol and join the citizens of Jim Wells County |
---|
63 | 63 | | as they celebrate their county's many assets; and, be it further |
---|
64 | 64 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
65 | 65 | | the citizens of Jim Wells County as an expression of esteem from |
---|
66 | 66 | | the Texas Senate. |
