55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Grover L. Bynum Jr., who died
77 January 29, 2019, at the age of 91; and
88 WHEREAS, Grover Bynum was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma; he
99 attended Henryetta High School and led the football team to an
1010 undefeated record in 1942 as its star quarterback; and
1111 WHEREAS, He completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane
1212 University and earned a medical degree from the Tulane School of
1313 Medicine; he served in the United States Navy, and after his
1414 graduation from medical school, he served with distinction in the
1515 United States Air Force; and
1616 WHEREAS, While performing his fellowship at the Mayo
1717 Clinic in Minnesota, he met Anita Schneider and asked her father
1818 for her hand in marriage; they enjoyed nearly 60 years of
1919 marriage together and were blessed with four children, Deborah,
2020 Belinda, Grover Bynum III, and the late Thaddeus Bynum; and
2121 WHEREAS, Dr. Bynum was a founding member of the Capital
2222 Medical Clinic and played an important role in the creation of
2323 Austin's first medical district; he served as chief of staff at
2424 Seton Medical Center and Shoal Creek Hospital, and he was a
2525 member of the Health Services Advisory Board; he was active in a
2626 number of professional organizations, including the Travis
2727 County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association; and
2828 WHEREAS, He took great pleasure in the practice of medicine
2929 and continued to make house calls long after the industry
3030 standard, and many of his patients became longtime family
3131 friends; and
3232 WHEREAS, He was active in a number of community
3333 organizations including the West Austin Rotary Club and Knights
3434 of the Symphony; he was a member of the Headliners Club, and he
3535 was a charter member of Tarry House; he was a longtime member of
3636 Saint Martin's Lutheran Church; and
3737 WHEREAS, Grover Bynum was a devoted husband and father, and
3838 he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
3939 family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of Dr. Grover L. Bynum Jr.; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4545 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4646 memory of Dr. Grover Bynum.
