5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Dr. Grover L. Bynum Jr., who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | January 29, 2019, at the age of 91; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Grover Bynum was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma; he |
---|
9 | 9 | | attended Henryetta High School and led the football team to an |
---|
10 | 10 | | undefeated record in 1942 as its star quarterback; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, He completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane |
---|
12 | 12 | | University and earned a medical degree from the Tulane School of |
---|
13 | 13 | | Medicine; he served in the United States Navy, and after his |
---|
14 | 14 | | graduation from medical school, he served with distinction in the |
---|
15 | 15 | | United States Air Force; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, While performing his fellowship at the Mayo |
---|
17 | 17 | | Clinic in Minnesota, he met Anita Schneider and asked her father |
---|
18 | 18 | | for her hand in marriage; they enjoyed nearly 60 years of |
---|
19 | 19 | | marriage together and were blessed with four children, Deborah, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Belinda, Grover Bynum III, and the late Thaddeus Bynum; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bynum was a founding member of the Capital |
---|
22 | 22 | | Medical Clinic and played an important role in the creation of |
---|
23 | 23 | | Austin's first medical district; he served as chief of staff at |
---|
24 | 24 | | Seton Medical Center and Shoal Creek Hospital, and he was a |
---|
25 | 25 | | member of the Health Services Advisory Board; he was active in a |
---|
26 | 26 | | number of professional organizations, including the Travis |
---|
27 | 27 | | County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, He took great pleasure in the practice of medicine |
---|
29 | 29 | | and continued to make house calls long after the industry |
---|
30 | 30 | | standard, and many of his patients became longtime family |
---|
31 | 31 | | friends; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, He was active in a number of community |
---|
33 | 33 | | organizations including the West Austin Rotary Club and Knights |
---|
34 | 34 | | of the Symphony; he was a member of the Headliners Club, and he |
---|
35 | 35 | | was a charter member of Tarry House; he was a longtime member of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Saint Martin's Lutheran Church; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Grover Bynum was a devoted husband and father, and |
---|
38 | 38 | | he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his |
---|
39 | 39 | | family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
42 | 42 | | family of Dr. Grover L. Bynum Jr.; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
44 | 44 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
46 | 46 | | memory of Dr. Grover Bynum. |
