44 Elsa Gonzalez Laurel
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Elsa Gonzalez Laurel, who died February
77 5, 2019, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Laredo, Elsa Laurel was a direct
99 descendant of Tomas Sanchez, the city's founder, and she grew up
1010 in the historic Benavides-Herrera house; she earned her high
1111 school degree at the young age of 15, and she was later crowned
1212 the first Miss Laredo in 1948; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1951, she married the late Oscar M. Laurel, and
1414 she supported him through his career in local and state politics
1515 while giving generously of her time to many charitable and
1616 cultural organizations; the couple relocated to Washington,
1717 D.C., when Mr. Laurel was appointed to serve in President Lyndon
1818 B. Johnson's administration, and Mrs. Laurel soon became known
1919 for hosting legendary parties that brought South Texas flair to
2020 her northern neighbors; and
2121 WHEREAS, After Mr. and Mrs. Laurel left Washington, she
2222 traveled the world, spent time at the ranch, and supported their
2323 children, Elsa Laurel Nicholson and Oscar M. Laurel Jr., through
2424 their college years; above all, she cherished time spent with
2525 family, and her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
2626 enriched her life immeasurably; and
2727 WHEREAS, A woman of great dignity, kindness, and charm,
2828 Elsa Laurel was beloved by many, and she will long be remembered
2929 with respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share
3030 in her life; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3232 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3333 family of Elsa G. Laurel; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3535 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3636 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3737 memory of Elsa Laurel.
