5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Elsa Gonzalez Laurel, who died February |
---|
7 | 7 | | 5, 2019, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Laredo, Elsa Laurel was a direct |
---|
9 | 9 | | descendant of Tomas Sanchez, the city's founder, and she grew up |
---|
10 | 10 | | in the historic Benavides-Herrera house; she earned her high |
---|
11 | 11 | | school degree at the young age of 15, and she was later crowned |
---|
12 | 12 | | the first Miss Laredo in 1948; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1951, she married the late Oscar M. Laurel, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | she supported him through his career in local and state politics |
---|
15 | 15 | | while giving generously of her time to many charitable and |
---|
16 | 16 | | cultural organizations; the couple relocated to Washington, |
---|
17 | 17 | | D.C., when Mr. Laurel was appointed to serve in President Lyndon |
---|
18 | 18 | | B. Johnson's administration, and Mrs. Laurel soon became known |
---|
19 | 19 | | for hosting legendary parties that brought South Texas flair to |
---|
20 | 20 | | her northern neighbors; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, After Mr. and Mrs. Laurel left Washington, she |
---|
22 | 22 | | traveled the world, spent time at the ranch, and supported their |
---|
23 | 23 | | children, Elsa Laurel Nicholson and Oscar M. Laurel Jr., through |
---|
24 | 24 | | their college years; above all, she cherished time spent with |
---|
25 | 25 | | family, and her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren |
---|
26 | 26 | | enriched her life immeasurably; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A woman of great dignity, kindness, and charm, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Elsa Laurel was beloved by many, and she will long be remembered |
---|
29 | 29 | | with respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share |
---|
30 | 30 | | in her life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
33 | 33 | | family of Elsa G. Laurel; and, be it further |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
35 | 35 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
