11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 215
22 WHEREAS, Community action agencies in Texas have long
33 provided vital services to the Lone Star State's most vulnerable
44 citizens in an effort to help them alleviate poverty and become
55 self-sufficient; and
66 WHEREAS, Created when the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964
77 was signed into law, community action agencies have a 54-year
88 history of promoting self-sufficiency for citizens of limited
99 income in all Texas counties; and
1010 WHEREAS, Community action agencies are governed by a
1111 tripartite board representative of the entire community,
1212 including elected public officials, members of business,
1313 industry, labor, religious, law enforcement, education, or other
1414 major groups in the community and representatives of low-income
1515 individuals and families in the service area; and
1616 WHEREAS, Community action agencies provide a wide range of
1717 services that have kept pace with the changing needs of society
1818 and encompass disaster relief, literacy and life skills
1919 training, employment training, child and adult care, financial
2020 and leadership empowerment, energy efficiency programs and
2121 utility payment assistance, case management, transportation and
2222 nutritional assistance to the elderly and homebound, and a host
2323 of other programs; and
2424 WHEREAS, With a mission of helping people and changing
2525 lives, community action agencies have indeed helped to make Texas
2626 a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family; now,
2727 therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
2929 Legislature, hereby commend the community action agencies of
3030 Texas on their many contributions to the citizens of our state;
3131 and, be it further
3232 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3333 the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies as an
3434 expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
