2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Community action agencies in Texas have long |

3 | 3 | | provided vital services to the Lone Star State's most vulnerable |
---|
4 | 4 | | citizens in an effort to help them alleviate poverty and become |
---|
5 | 5 | | self-sufficient; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Created when the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 |
---|
7 | 7 | | was signed into law, community action agencies have a 54-year |
---|
8 | 8 | | history of promoting self-sufficiency for citizens of limited |
---|
9 | 9 | | income in all Texas counties; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Community action agencies are governed by a |
---|
11 | 11 | | tripartite board representative of the entire community, |
---|
12 | 12 | | including elected public officials, members of business, |
---|
13 | 13 | | industry, labor, religious, law enforcement, education, or other |
---|
14 | 14 | | major groups in the community and representatives of low-income |
---|
15 | 15 | | individuals and families in the service area; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Community action agencies provide a wide range of |
---|
17 | 17 | | services that have kept pace with the changing needs of society |
---|
18 | 18 | | and encompass disaster relief, literacy and life skills |
---|
19 | 19 | | training, employment training, child and adult care, financial |
---|
20 | 20 | | and leadership empowerment, energy efficiency programs and |
---|
21 | 21 | | utility payment assistance, case management, transportation and |
---|
22 | 22 | | nutritional assistance to the elderly and homebound, and a host |
---|
23 | 23 | | of other programs; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, With a mission of helping people and changing |
---|
25 | 25 | | lives, community action agencies have indeed helped to make Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family; now, |
---|
27 | 27 | | therefore, be it |
---|
28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby commend the community action agencies of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Texas on their many contributions to the citizens of our state; |
---|
31 | 31 | | and, be it further |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
33 | 33 | | the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies as an |
---|
34 | 34 | | expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
