1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 224
2	2	WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas, one
3	3	of the nation's oldest law enforcement organizations, are
4	4	gathering in Austin on February 26, 2019, to participate in
5	5	Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of
7	7	sheriff in each county of the state; legislation requires that a
8	8	sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the
9	9	state; moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail,
10	10	bail bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts; in
11	11	some smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax
12	12	collector; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The first meeting of this esteemed association
14	14	took place on August 14, 1874; association members adopted their
15	15	preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another in the
16	16	execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties against
17	17	criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their
18	18	respective counties and throughout the state; through the years,
19	19	members of the association have continued to support the dictates
20	20	of this mission; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest forms
22	22	of law enforcement; sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are
23	23	elected to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the
24	24	Sheriffs' Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500
25	25	individuals are active members of the group, and more than 50,000
26	26	individuals are honorary members; now, therefore, be it
27	27	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
28	28	Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as Sheriffs'
29	29	Association of Texas Day at the Capitol and commend the members
30	30	of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas for their many
31	31	contributions to our state; and, be it further
32	32	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
33	33	the association as an expression of high regard from the
34	34	Texas Senate.
