SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 231 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Snyder in celebrating February 27, 2019, as Snyder's first Snyder Day at the Capitol; and WHEREAS, The city of Snyder had its beginnings in 1878 when merchant and buffalo hunter William Henry Snyder built a trading post on the banks of Deep Creek; a settlement grew around the post, and the settlement was named the seat of Scurry County in 1884; by 1892, the community had a population of 600 residents, and in 1907 Snyder was granted a city charter; by the 1910 Census, Snyder was home to more than 2,500 people; and WHEREAS, Throughout its history, farming and ranching have played a vital role in the area's economy; in 1948, oil was discovered nearby, and Snyder experienced a dramatic growth as oil joined agriculture as an economic mainstay; during the 1960s, Snyder was named one of only 11 All-American Cities by the National Municipal League and Look magazine; and WHEREAS, Opportunities for higher education in Snyder became a reality with the founding of Western Texas College in 1971, and today, the institution is a leading state college for job placement; in addition, the city is home to the Diamond M Museum, which houses one of the finest art collections in the state; the collection includes works by Andrew Wyeth and Peter Hurd; and WHEREAS, Snyder is an exceptional community in which to live, work, and raise a family, and it is truly fitting that a day be set aside to pay tribute to the city's many amenities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th Legislature, hereby commend the people of Snyder on their many contributions to the growth and prosperity of our state and extend to them best wishes for a rewarding Snyder Day at the Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
