| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Snyder in celebrating February 27, 2019, as |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Snyder's first Snyder Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The city of Snyder had its beginnings in 1878 when |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | merchant and buffalo hunter William Henry Snyder built a trading |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | post on the banks of Deep Creek; a settlement grew around the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | post, and the settlement was named the seat of Scurry County in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 1884; by 1892, the community had a population of 600 residents, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and in 1907 Snyder was granted a city charter; by the 1910 Census, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Snyder was home to more than 2,500 people; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, farming and ranching have |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | played a vital role in the area's economy; in 1948, oil was |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | discovered nearby, and Snyder experienced a dramatic growth as |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | oil joined agriculture as an economic mainstay; during the 1960s, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Snyder was named one of only 11 All-American Cities by the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | National Municipal League and Look magazine; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Opportunities for higher education in Snyder |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | became a reality with the founding of Western Texas College in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 1971, and today, the institution is a leading state college for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | job placement; in addition, the city is home to the Diamond M |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Museum, which houses one of the finest art collections in the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | state; the collection includes works by Andrew Wyeth and Peter |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Hurd; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Snyder is an exceptional community in which to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | live, work, and raise a family, and it is truly fitting that a day |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | be set aside to pay tribute to the city's many amenities; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend the people of Snyder on their many |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | contributions to the growth and prosperity of our state and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | extend to them best wishes for a rewarding Snyder Day at the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Capitol; and, be it further |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
