55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Dovie Lee Greene
77 Jackson, who died December 23, 2018; and
88 WHEREAS, Dovie Lee Greene Jackson was a lifelong Texan and
99 a 30-year employee of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts;
1010 she was known for her intelligence, fairness, and compassion and
1111 for dedicating her life to serving others; and
1212 WHEREAS, She was born September 8, 1952, in Odessa, Texas,
1313 and was the third of six children of Shellie T. Greene and Ruby
1414 O'Neal Greene; and
1515 WHEREAS, She graduated from Ector High School in 1971, and
1616 she began working for the comptroller's Odessa Enforcement
1717 Office in 1977, during a time when women and people of color were
1818 still coming up through the ranks; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson received her bachelor of business
2020 administration degree in management from The University of Texas
2121 of the Permian Basin in 1981, and she fulfilled all the
2222 requirements for her degree while working full-time as an
2323 enforcement officer; and
2424 WHEREAS, In 1982, she was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha
2525 Sorority, Incorporated, Rho Iota Chapter, and she later was
2626 honored as a Silver Soror; and
2727 WHEREAS, She completed the Graduate School of Business
2828 Governor's Executive Development Program at The University of
2929 Texas Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs in 1992; and
3030 WHEREAS, Dovie received the Distinguished Former Odessan
3131 award in 1998 from the Heritage of Odessa Foundation, and The
3232 University of Texas of the Permian Basin Alumni Association
3333 honored Mrs. Jackson as its 2006 Distinguished Alumnus for her
3434 professional achievements and loyal service to the university; and
3535 WHEREAS, She was a longtime member of Mount Zion Baptist
3636 Church in Austin and served as a member of the church's board of
3737 trustees, finance committee, and building committee; and
3838 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson was President Emeritus of Black
3939 American Comptroller Employees, and she was the first African
4040 American and first woman to be named Deputy Comptroller for the
4141 State of Texas; and
4242 WHEREAS, She was the first director of the Comptroller's
4343 Employee Engagement Division, and she served as a mentor to the
4444 agency's next generation of employees; she worked across the
4545 agency to make the workplace better for all; and
4646 WHEREAS, Dovie Jackson was a source of inspiration to
4747 others and gave selflessly of her heart, her time, her service,
4848 and her resources; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members of
5151 her family: her husband, Isaac Jackson; her daughter, Tracy
5252 Ellis-Harrison; her sons, Isaac D. Jackson and Christopher N.
5353 Jackson; her grandchildren, Shamar Harrison, Brittney C.
5454 Jackson, Briana Jackson, and Dorian C. Jackson; her siblings,
5555 Dr. Dorothy Greene Jackson, Shellie Greene, Henretta Greene
5656 Holmes, and Marilyn Greene Clark; and a host of nieces, nephews,
5757 and cousins; and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5959 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
6060 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
6161 memory of Dovie Lee Greene Jackson.
