55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
66 memories of Gene Pemberton of Temple, who passed away on
77 January 27, 2019, at the age of 79; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Cameron on October 27, 1939, Gene
99 Pemberton was the son of E. M. and Aleyne Pemberton and the
1010 brother of Stanton and Cheryl; a graduate of Temple High School
1111 and Temple Junior College, he continued his education at
1212 Hardin-Simmons University, where he earned a bachelor of
1313 business administration degree; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 1961, Mr. Pemberton was joined in matrimony to
1515 the former Mary Holick, with whom he shared a fulfilling union of
1616 five and a half decades until her passing in 2017; he was a
1717 dedicated father to his children, Gary, Allen, and Lisa, and he
1818 was further blessed with five grandchildren, Brandon, Andrew,
1919 Jeffrey, Elisabeth, and Emalye; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Pemberton worked for American Desk
2121 Manufacturing Company for 31 years, during which time he served
2222 as vice president of marketing and director of special projects;
2323 a prominent figure in the local sports community, he was a color
2424 commentator for KTEM Radio on Temple Wildcat Broadcast for nearly
2525 three decades, and he and his partner, Mark McLain, received
2626 recognition for their outstanding work with an Associated Press
2727 Award in 1992 and a Katie Award from the Press Club of Dallas in
2828 1993; in addition, Mr. Pemberton belonged to the Southwest
2929 Basketball Officials Association for 23 years, and the
3030 organization honored him with a lifetime membership in 1984; and
3131 WHEREAS, Following his tenure with American Desk,
3232 Mr. Pemberton was hired by the Houston Astros, serving initially
3333 as director of community development; he subsequently became the
3434 team's chaplain, earning the distinction of being the first
3535 full-time chaplain in Major League Baseball; this esteemed civic
3636 leader was also president of the Kiwanis Club and a Legion of
3737 Honor member, and he was a devoted congregant and deacon of
3838 Bethel Church of the Assemblies of God; and
3939 WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family, his community, and
4040 his faith, Gene Pemberton made a meaningful difference in the
4141 lives of his loved ones and fellow citizens alike, and his
4242 contributions will be fondly remembered for years to come; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4545 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Gene Pemberton
4646 and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and,
4747 be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5050 this day, it do so in memory of Gene Pemberton.
