| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join citizens around the state in celebrating February 25, 2019, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | as Prairie View A&M University Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On August 14, 1867, the Texas Legislature |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | established the Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of Texas for Colored Youth, the first state-supported college in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Texas for African Americans; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Now known as Prairie View A&M University, the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | school is the second-oldest public institution in Texas and is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | ranked among the nation's best colleges and universities; the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | school's current president, Dr. Ruth Simmons, holds a doctorate |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | from Harvard University and formerly served as president of Smith |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | College and Brown University; she is the recipient of numerous |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | honors and is a member of the National Academy of Arts and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Sciences; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M University is known as a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | leading institution for higher education in such areas as |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | agricultural research, architecture, biology, business, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | education, engineering, juvenile justice, and nursing; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | students benefit from a challenging curriculum that prepares |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | them to thrive in their chosen careers; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished history, Prairie |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | View A&M University has awarded approximately 50,000 academic |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | degrees; it is a leader among historically black colleges and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | universities and is a valuable component of The Texas A&M |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | University System; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby commend the educators, staff, and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | administrators of Prairie View A&M University and extend to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | them best wishes for a memorable Prairie View A&M University |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Day at the Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
