55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of John J. McKetta Jr., who died
77 January 15, 2019, at the age of 103; and
88 WHEREAS, Johnny McKetta was born on October 17, 1915, in
99 Wyano, Pennsylvania, to John and Mary McKetta, and he grew up in
1010 the coal towns of western Pennsylvania; he mined coal for a time
1111 and was a regional Golden Gloves boxing champion before studying
1212 chemical engineering at Trine University in Indiana; and
1313 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, the late Helen Elisabeth
1414 Smith "Pinky" McKetta, married on October 17, 1943, and they enjoyed
1515 67 years of marriage together; they were blessed with four children,
1616 and their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source
1717 of much pride and joy for him; and
1818 WHEREAS, Johnny McKetta joined the faculty of The
1919 University of Texas at Austin in 1946 as a chemical engineering
2020 professor; he went on to become one of the most widely respected
2121 professors in his field, and he was beloved by many generations
2222 of students for his engaging sense of humor and his ability to
2323 inspire them in their studies; he served as dean of the
2424 university's College of Engineering, and he was a prolific
2525 author; in 2012, the university renamed his home department the
2626 John J. McKetta Jr. Department of Chemical Engineering; and
2727 WHEREAS, One of the world's foremost experts on energy, he
2828 served as an advisor to five United States presidents and held
2929 leadership positions with the National Energy Policy Committee
3030 and the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board; he was the editor of a
3131 68-volume encyclopedia and the author or editor of 20 other
3232 books, and he published approximately 400 articles in scholarly
3333 journals; and
3434 WHEREAS, He was elected by his peers to serve as president
3535 of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and in 1989, he
3636 was awarded the Hoover Medal, which recognizes great, unselfish,
3737 nontechnical services by engineers to humanity; he served for 50
3838 years as a trustee at his alma mater, Trine University, which
3939 also named its chemical engineering department in his honor; and
4040 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
4141 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4242 forever by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4545 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4646 family of John J. McKetta Jr.; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4949 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5050 memory of John J. McKetta Jr.
