| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Victoria County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on February 26, 2019, to celebrate Victoria County Day |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Victoria County is located in southeastern Texas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on the Gulf Coastal Plains; the area was first colonized by |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Martin de León in 1824, with the establishment of a settlement in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | a Mexican colony named for Mexico's first elected president, Don |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Guadalupe Victoria; Victoria County was one of the original 23 |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | counties established by the First Congress of the Republic of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Texas on March 17, 1836; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Due to its abundant natural grasslands and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | subtropical climate that allow for year-round grazing, the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | county became a leader in the development of the Texas cattle |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | industry; as knowledge about cultivating prairie soils |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | increased, commercial farming of diverse crops developed in the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | area in the late 1890s, and the production of corn and cotton grew |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in importance; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the heart of the Golden Crescent |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | region, the city of Victoria is the county's largest community |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and serves as the county seat; since its humble beginnings in the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | early 1800s, it has become the cultural, historic, and economic |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | hub for people throughout the region; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Victoria County have faced |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | numerous challenges over the years, and they deserve praise for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | their resiliency; their strength was particularly evident in the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | wake of 2017's Hurricane Harvey when residents courageously |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | supported one another and committed to repairing the county's |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | many damaged structures; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | they work together to build a bright future, the citizens of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Victoria County may take justifiable pride in the important role |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | they continue to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as Victoria |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | stay in Austin. |
