2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Hopkins County are gathering in |

3 | 3 | | Austin on February 28, 2019, to celebrate Hopkins County Day at |
---|
4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Hopkins County has an area of 789 square miles |
---|
6 | 6 | | with both blackland prairie and piney wood terrain; originally |
---|
7 | 7 | | inhabited by the Caddo and then the Cherokee people, the county |
---|
8 | 8 | | was created in 1846 and named for a family of pioneers; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Corn, wheat, sheep, and cattle were important in |
---|
10 | 10 | | the 19th century, but cotton became the dominant crop between |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1890 and 1930; in 1937 the Carnation Milk Company opened a |
---|
12 | 12 | | processing plant in the county, and its presence, in conjunction |
---|
13 | 13 | | with better road and rail transportation, allowed dairy farming |
---|
14 | 14 | | to become the major agricultural undertaking; by 1990 the county |
---|
15 | 15 | | boasted nearly 500 dairies supplying 17 percent of the state's |
---|
16 | 16 | | total milk; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, population in the county has grown to about |
---|
18 | 18 | | 36,000, with 16,000 people living in the county seat, Sulphur |
---|
19 | 19 | | Springs; dairy production continues to be a mainstay of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | economy, along with food processing and distribution, cattle |
---|
21 | 21 | | raising, and horse breeding; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Sulphur Springs features a number of popular |
---|
23 | 23 | | attractions, including the Southwest Dairy Museum and Education |
---|
24 | 24 | | Center, the Leo Saint Clair Music Box Museum, and the Hopkins |
---|
25 | 25 | | County Museum and Heritage Park; the city's striking all-glass |
---|
26 | 26 | | restroom downtown has drawn national attention and was the first |
---|
27 | 27 | | of its kind in the United States; moreover, the area is a |
---|
28 | 28 | | well-known center for aquatic recreation, with Lake Fork and |
---|
29 | 29 | | Cooper Lake State Park offering opportunities for trophy bass |
---|
30 | 30 | | fishing, as well as boating and swimming; bird-watchers, hikers, |
---|
31 | 31 | | and campers also seek out the county, and special events like the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freeze Off at the Hopkins |
---|
33 | 33 | | County Dairy Festival in June are enjoyed by residents and |
---|
34 | 34 | | visitors alike; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Citizens of Hopkins County are working to build a |
---|
36 | 36 | | prosperous future even as they honor the achievements of the |
---|
37 | 37 | | past, and they may take great pride in the history and character |
---|
38 | 38 | | of their notable region; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2019, as Hopkins |
---|
41 | 41 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
42 | 42 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable |
---|
43 | 43 | | stay in Austin. |
