1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 257
2	2	WHEREAS, Weatherford College is celebrating its 150th
3	3	anniversary in 2019, providing a fitting opportunity to pay
4	4	tribute to this fine institution's long record of
5	5	achievement; and
6	6	WHEREAS, One of the oldest colleges in Texas, Weatherford
7	7	College was established in 1869, before both Texas A&M University
8	8	and The University of Texas; founded by the Phoenix Lodge No. 273
9	9	of the Masons, the school was originally known as the Weatherford
10	10	Masonic Institute and later as Cleveland College; in the 1880s,
11	11	the school was purchased by the Methodist Church and renamed
12	12	Weatherford College; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Women were first admitted to Weatherford in 1917,
14	14	and the school officially became a junior college in 1921; its
15	15	association with the Methodist Church ended in 1949, when the
16	16	school became a public institution; during the 1960s,
17	17	Weatherford's student population began to outgrow the original
18	18	building, called Old Main, and in 1968, the school was relocated
19	19	to its current hilltop location; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Weatherford College today serves Parker, Palo
21	21	Pinto, Hood, Jack, and Wise Counties, and it has educational
22	22	centers in Mineral Wells and Granbury, as well as a campus
23	23	between Decatur and Bridgeport; the school offers associate and
24	24	associate of applied science degrees in a wide variety of
25	25	subjects, including accounting, biology, liberal arts, music,
26	26	premedicine, teacher education, business administration,
27	27	criminal justice, fire science, information technology, and
28	28	occupational therapy, among many others; and
29	29	WHEREAS, In January 2019, Weatherford College was named
30	30	Educational Partner of the Year by Workforce Solutions of
31	31	North Central Texas at the group's 22nd annual Awards of
32	32	Excellence in Grand Prairie, and it was cited for its 35 training
33	33	opportunities for occupations listed on the group's Target
34	34	Occupations List; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich heritage as they work to
36	36	prepare for a bright future, the students, faculty, and staff of
37	37	Weatherford College may indeed take great pride in their
38	38	institution and its long history of educational excellence; now,
39	39	therefore, be it
40	40	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
41	41	Legislature, hereby commemorate the sesquicentennial of
42	42	Weatherford College and extend to the members of the college
43	43	community sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
44	44	it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
46	46	prepared for Weatherford College as an expression of high regard
47	47	from the Texas Senate.
