11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 263
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Rest Lawn Cemetery in Houston, which has received the
44 Historic Texas Cemetery designation; and
55 WHEREAS, Rest Lawn is one of the oldest cemeteries in the
66 historically African American community of Acres Homes, an area
77 that by the 1950s was considered to be the largest unincorporated
88 Negro community in the southern United States; located about 12
99 miles northwest of downtown Houston, the area was developed by
1010 businessman Alfred A. Wright starting in 1910 and was finally
1111 annexed to the City of Houston in the period of years from 1967 to
1212 1974; and
1313 WHEREAS, Many of the city's African American community
1414 leaders of the post-emancipation era are buried in the cemetery,
1515 including veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean
1616 War along with Texas native Weldon "Juke Boy" Bonner, an African
1717 American blues singer and musician; and
1818 WHEREAS, Rest Lawn Cemetery has been lovingly cared for
1919 over the years by such volunteer groups as Second Chance
2020 Outreach, Incorporated, and the Iota Iota Iota Chapter of Omega
2121 Psi Phi Fraternity; and
2222 WHEREAS, Rest Lawn Cemetery is a key historical site in
2323 Houston; its designation as a Historic Texas Cemetery signifies
2424 for future generations the importance of the cemetery in the
2525 historical memory of this state; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
2727 Legislature, hereby recognize the historical significance of
2828 Rest Lawn Cemetery and extend to all associated with the cemetery
2929 congratulations on its designation as a Historic Texas Cemetery;
3030 and, be it further
3131 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3232 honor of Rest Lawn Cemetery.
