| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Rowlett are gathering in Austin on |

| 3 | 3 | | February 28, 2019, to celebrate Rowlett Day at the State |

| 4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The area around present-day Rowlett was first |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | settled in the 1840s by members of the Peters and Mercer |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Colonies; a post office was set up in 1880 and named Morris, after |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | its first postmaster, but the name was later changed to Rowlett, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | after Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the east fork of the Trinity |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | River; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the Dallas and Greenville Railway |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in 1889 helped the town become a prosperous cotton farming |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | community with a school, churches, and businesses, and in 1921, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | it was included on the route of the Bankhead Highway, the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | nation's second cross-country paved highway; the city was |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | incorporated in 1952 by a vote of 84 citizens; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, Rowlett has grown into a thriving city of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | more than 60,000 residents who enjoy 30 miles of beautiful Lake |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Ray Hubbard shoreline; it has been named a Tree City USA, and it |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | won recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Dallas Business Journal for its economic development |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | achievements; popular annual events include an Easter egg hunt, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | fireworks on the Fourth of July, the Movies on Main series, and a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony every Christmas; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Rowlett may take |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | justifiable pride in the fine Texas town they call home; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2019, as Rowlett Day |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |

| 32 | 32 | | sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin. |
