2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Pecos County are coming together in |

3 | 3 | | Austin on February 26, 2019, to observe Pecos County Day at the |
---|
4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A region characterized by desert brushland, |
---|
6 | 6 | | stately mesas, and arroyos, Pecos County was formally established |
---|
7 | 7 | | in 1871 by the Texas Legislature and named for the Pecos River |
---|
8 | 8 | | that flows along the county's northern boundary; the county seat |
---|
9 | 9 | | of Fort Stockton derives its name from the area's first permanent |
---|
10 | 10 | | settlement, an army outpost installed in 1859 to guard the postal |
---|
11 | 11 | | route; with its favorable proximity to Comanche Springs, Fort |
---|
12 | 12 | | Stockton developed into a supply center for the military, mail |
---|
13 | 13 | | carriers, wagon trains, and travelers and was the site of one of |
---|
14 | 14 | | the first modern attempts at irrigation farming in Texas; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Construction of the Kansas City, Mexico and |
---|
16 | 16 | | Orient Railway Company of Texas in 1913 contributed to the |
---|
17 | 17 | | economy, and irrigation projects also attracted land buyers, |
---|
18 | 18 | | spurring the creation of communities like Baldridge, Girvin, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Imperial, Chancellor, Belding, and Buena Vista; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The discovery of oil at Yates Field in 1927 opened |
---|
21 | 21 | | what would become one of the largest oil fields in the country, |
---|
22 | 22 | | and the county subsequently experienced an oil boom that gave |
---|
23 | 23 | | rise to the towns of Red Barn, Iraan, and Bakersfield; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, petroleum continues to be the foundation |
---|
25 | 25 | | of the county's economy, while the area produces cantaloupes, |
---|
26 | 26 | | carrots, bell peppers, peaches, and pecans, and livestock raised |
---|
27 | 27 | | include cattle, sheep, and Angora goats; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, An array of cultural events attracts residents |
---|
29 | 29 | | and visitors alike, including the Pecos County Livestock Show and |
---|
30 | 30 | | various rodeos, cook-offs, community theater productions, |
---|
31 | 31 | | country and folk music concerts, and holiday celebrations; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Pecos County is a unique and fascinating part of |
---|
33 | 33 | | the Lone Star State, and it is most fitting to take this |
---|
34 | 34 | | opportunity to honor its citizens for working to preserve their |
---|
35 | 35 | | colorful past while they build an even brighter future for the |
---|
36 | 36 | | region they call home; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as Pecos County |
---|
39 | 39 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
---|
40 | 40 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
