| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Greater Houston Black Chamber are |

| 3 | 3 | | gathering in Austin on February 26, 2019, for their legislative |

| 4 | 4 | | day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, One of the oldest black chambers of commerce in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the nation, the organization was founded by a group of prominent |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | community leaders as the Houston Negro Chamber of Commerce in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | September 1935 to support, empower, and advocate for African |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | American businesses in the city; the chamber established itself |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | as a catalyst for positive change through its efforts to promote |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the economic mobility and overall welfare of Houston residents |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and through its involvement in such issues as fairer housing and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | employment practices; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Greater Houston Black Chamber is the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | premier organization for business development and partnership |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | opportunities in the local African American community, which |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | constitutes approximately 25 percent of the city's population; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the chamber supports African American small businesses in |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | obtaining education and certification as well as in accessing |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | contracting opportunities and capital, and it helps its partners |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and members identify and connect with other minority-owned |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | businesses; the chamber currently maintains alliances with a |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | host of major corporations, universities, and organizations in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | order to offer the best possible services; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For more than eight decades, the Greater Houston |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Black Chamber has provided a forum for African American-owned |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | businesses to grow and thrive, and its members may take pride in |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the proud tradition of excellence they have built; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as Greater Houston |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Black Chamber Legislative Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | welcome to the visiting delegation; and, be it further |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
